Sisu Skiers
Fall/Winter Program

Who can be a Sisu Skiers?

Any adult Nordic skier -- beginner to advanced -- who has come to realize that the easiest way to increase their enjoyment of the sport is by improving the efficiency of their ski technique. Participants should have some ski experience.

Program Goals

  • Provide high-quality instruction in the techniques of efficient Nordic skiing.
  • Introduce the physical training methods which improve Nordic ski fitness.
  • Break down the technical aspects of each technique into an easy learning progression.

Ideal for Citizen Racers

Citizen racers will benefit by the extensive racing experience of our coaches and the opportunity to meet other skiers with similar interests.

The enthusiastic comments of our past participants indicate that they were able to learn how to gain new advantages over their competition!

Maximize Your Cross Training

Nordic skiing is the ideal winter season cross training method for athletes who focus on other endurance sports during the remainder of the year.

Our program provides athletes with the opportunity to gain the most benefit from Nordic ski training.

Many cross trainers learn to enjoy Nordic skiing as much as their primary sport.

Lifelong Fitness

In addition to fun, lifelong fitness is the most important benefit of Nordic skiing.

Our program teaches its participants how to take full advantage of this important benefit.

Regardless of your current level of fitness at the beginning of the program, or your area of interest -- racing, cross training, or recreational skiing -- you will learn how to increase your level of fitness.

Customized to Your Needs

We are able to customize the instruction to the needs of our participants by carefully dividing them into small groups for each type of training session -- dryland, skating and classical skiing. This is done to ensure that each individual is given the opportunity to train with others of similar physical ability and ski experience.

Skate Versus Classic Technique

The Sisu Skier Program strongly believes that to become a more proficient Nordic skier, you can gain a lot by developing both skating and classical techniques.

For this reason, all on-snow training will attempt to give equal emphasis to each of the two disciplines.

Both skating and classic ski equipment is necessary to participate in this group.

Program Schedule

  • We meet each Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Como Nordic Ski Center beginning the first Wednesday in October and continuing through mid-February.
  • Prior to snow, there will be about 8 sessions which focus on fitness improvement through dryland ski imitation training.
  • Also prior to snow, there will be coached Saturday morning workouts at 8:00 a.m. beginning in mid-September at the Battle Creek Recreation Center.
  • Weather permitting, 12 on-snow sessions will be devoted to developing efficient Nordic ski technique evenly split between classic and skating.
  • Sisu Skiers can call the store or watch for schedule updates via e-mail.
  • Periodic classroom sessions will be included to discuss technical subjects such as ski waxing and race preparation.

Sisu Skiers Technique Day
  • Participants in the Fall-Winter Program will be invited to join the members of other Sisu Skier programs in a full day of intensive on-snow technique training on a Sunday in early December.
  • This session, which includes video taping of all participants, is an excellent way to begin the ski season with the most efficient ski technique possible.

Training Sites

  • Battle Creek Park, St. Paul: Winthrop Street
  • Como Nordic Center, St. Paul.
  • Finn Sisu lnc., St. Paul.
  • Elm Creek and/or Troll Hollow will be used if low snow. Additional cost for trail fee.

Coaching Staff

Our coaches include men and women who are all long-term participants in the other Sisu Skier programs.

Each coach has developed a high degree of proficiency in skiing as well as a strong desire to share what they have learned.

Their current participation in a well-coached program ensures that they can easily relate to the challenges being faced by other skiers who are attempting to improve. They also have access to the most current developments in ski technique.
