Tour de Finn
The Tour de Finn Series is a free individual and team competition to encourage participation in local Midwest, smaller-scale races for the bolstering of fun, community, and the magic of ski racing.
How to Score Points
There are nine events that qualify folks for points. Individuals can gain points through their best six events. Teams earn points from their top 3 racers per gender in each event. See full details here.
Registration
Individuals will be automatically entered through their participation in a series event.
Teams must register (free) by January 5 for scoring of all races. Gather up to 10 people for your team. Maximum five folks per gender. Register here!
Don’t have a team? Fill out this form and we’ll try to find you one!

Registration
Individuals
- Individuals are automatically entered into the series via their participation in any series event.
- It’s helpful for individuals to register for events with a consistent name. Final results are not guaranteed with inconsistent names (Matt vs Matthew).
Teams
- Teams must register byJanuary 5, 2024 for all event points to be counted (points from previous races prior to January 5, 2024 will be counted retroactively.)
- If teams register after January 5, 2024, only event points on or after their date of registration will be counted.
- Teams should register through the link provided below and do NOT need to register as a team through the specific events.
- Team Criteria: 10 person capacity; 5 male, 5 female - non-binary persons welcome in either category. You can have fewer members- these are the maximum numbers.

Scoring Points
Individuals
Placement Points
- All events are scored separately for different genders.
- Since every individual who races in a series event is considered a participant, points will be assigned to each racer.
- Every race in the series generates placement points.
- The number of points a racer receives is: 100 * (1 - ((place - 1) / number of participants))
- e.g. In a field of 50:
- 1st place receives 100 points
- 2nd place, 98 points
- 3rd place, 96 points
- e.g. In a field of 200:
- 1st place receives 100 points
- 2nd place, 99.5 points
- 3rd place, 99 points
- The number of points a racer can receive for completing an event is floored at 20 (e.g. the last place racer will receive 20 points instead of 0)
- Every racer beyond the 20 points continues to receive 20 points for participation.
- There is an age advantage, which is simply points added to a racers, for every race they participate in. The age advantage is:
- <= 40 years old: 0 points
- > 40 years old: (age - 40) * .5 points
- Where the total score, with the advantage, is capped at 100
- e.g.
- A 40 year old gets no age bonus
- A 50 year old gets a 5 point increase for every race they participate in
- e.g. If a 50 year old scored 80 points by placement, and 85 points total
- A 60 year old gets a 10 point increase
- A 70 year old gets a 15 point increase
- Age advantages do not apply to event incentives, which are a flat 15 points.
Event Incentives
- You can earn the following event incentives, based on the number of events an individual racer completes.
- 3 races: +15 points additional points
- 6 races: +20 points additional points
- 9 races: +25 points additional points
Final Score
- The final series score for a racer will be the sum of:
- The top 6 racer points
- e.g. a racer may miss up to 3 events and still have 6 races with placement points
- e.g. a racer may discard their worst 3 races from final score (if they do all 9 events)
- Ties: In case of a tie in total points, the individual with the highest number of events participated in will be used to break the tie.
- If there is still a tie, the participants will all be declared winners.
Team
- Racers may only belong to one team.
- For each event we score the following within teams:
- Top 3 women
- Top 3 men
- The teams with the highest number of points at the end of the season win.
- Ties:
- In the case of still a tie, the team with the most participation in all the events will be declared the winner.
- In case of a tie in total points, the team with the most total points in any one individual event will be declared the winner.
Event Cancellations/Modifications
- In the case of an event cancellation, the series will go on without it.
- In the case of an event being shortened or modified, the equivalent event will be counted.
- In the case of an event rescheduling, if there is no conflicting series race that weekend, this will continue to count toward the series points. If there is an already scheduled series event that same weekend, the series points will go to the event that was originally scheduled for that weekend.

It’s here. The ski series you didn’t know you needed. A shout-out to the legendary Skinnyski Series of which this series respectfully nods and appreciates, as it paved the wave for this new assemblage of races.
As you may have heard, Finn Sisu is under new ownership after Ahvo Taipale, icon of the Twin Cities ski community, retired this summer as founder and owner. Ahvo is a tough act to follow, but one goal of the Finn Sisu team is to lift up and fortify the local racing scene, as a place to come together, see old and new friends, experience the same but also inevitably very different journeys down the race course, share those tales of tears and triumph, falls and finesse, peril and persistence. Racing often brings out the humanity in us, the best and the humbling, and with this vulnerability, we return year after year. Enter… the Tour de Finn Series.
How many of us long for a Finlandia axe? How many of us have eaten a cheese sandwich after a Vasaloppet event? Or better yet, spilled blueberry soup down our frontside, to immediately freeze because it’s five below? How many have skied the Pepsi just to enjoy the glory of the Giant’s Ridge trails?
We join these races because we want:
- A space to come together with our friends and community
- To support the local ski clubs and organizations
- To support the trail associations that maintain access to these incredible trail systems that we have here in the Midwest
The thrill of the challenge, and the journey that takes to get there
Join us for any of these races. We hope you’ll come to your favorites, but also try a couple of new ones, which could very possibly become new favorites. The hope is to encourage everyone to go to a few more than they usually would. And we’ll be right there with you!
You can expect:
- Series points updates following races
- Commentary on said races
- Wax recommendations and reports for upcoming races
- On-site wax and tech support at many of the races
Please share your stories and photos with us at [email protected] or on social media with #tourdefinn.
We can’t wait to get started!
